Bulgaria is a country in south eastern Europe with a population of approximately 7.7 million people . It borders five countries; Romania to the north (mostly along the Danube ), Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, with Greece and Turkey to the south. It is bordered by the Black Sea to the east.
Today, Bulgaria is a democratic , unitary , constitutional republic , a member of the European Union and of NATO . Its capital and largest city is Sofia and its currency is the Leva .
In the past 10 years, Bulgaria has experienced a stable economy with a government committed to economic reform. It has seen a significant amount of foreign investment since its entry into the European Union at the beginning of 2007. Low inflation has led to a vibrant business environment with an annual growth rate of 5.1% since 2000.
